Shoulder Pain and Auto Injury

If you are suffering from shoulder pain after a car crash, don't worry. Dr. Hans sees this type of condition often in our Duluth office. Your chiropractor can be very helpful for shoulder pain symptoms after a crash. Let's see what causes shoulder pain and why chiropractic works.

There are at least two ways that you can develop shoulder problems after a car crash: by direct trauma to the shoulder or by referred pain from the neck.

Direct trauma can be caused by striking your shoulder on a hard object in the car during the crash, or can occur if you have a tight grip on the steering wheel during a rear end collision. With this type of injury, you'll usually be aware of the pain soon after the wreck.

More frequently, Dr. Hans finds that shoulder or arm pain does not immediately appear after a crash, but starts a few days or weeks after the accident. This type of shoulder discomfort actually starts in the cervical spine. Injured soft tissue in your spine can tweak nerves in your neck, causing numbness, tingling, or pain in your shoulder, elbow, or wrist.

We've treated both kinds of shoulder problems in our Duluth office. This care involves chiropractic adjustments to restore your spine's natural flexibility and exercises that strengthen your neck and shoulder.

Let us help you recover from shoulder pain. Dr. Hans has helped many patients with the same problem, and we can probably help you, too. The first step is to get an accurate diagnosis to determine what's causing your pain and then we will determine an appropriate treatment strategy. Ready to make an appointment? Relief from Asthma with Chiropractic

Duluth asthma care with chiropracticAsthma is a serious issue for many people in Duluth and for a society as a whole, since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that this condition currently affects almost 19 million adults and 7 million children in the United States. A full-blown asthma attack likely means a hospital visit. Fortunately, Dr. Hans has helped many folks in Duluth get relief from asthma symptoms.

Research Shows Chiropractic Helps With Asthma

The scientific literature confirms what we see in our office. For instance, a paper published in Clinical and Experimental Allergy assessed 31 adult asthma patients after getting four weeks of chiropractic treatments. The researchers reported that the patients who received chiropractic adjustments had a 34% decrease in asthma symptoms.

The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics printed another asthma-based study, except this one involved kids. In this article, the 36 participants ranged from 6 to 17 years in age and their asthma was considered either mild or moderate in severity.

After 12 weeks of chiropractic adjustments, as a whole, the children reported a higher quality of life and a decreased level of severity. As a bonus, they also indicated that they relied less on their bronchodilator and these positive effects were still being demonstrated one year after chiropractic care was complete.

Studies Confirm that Chiropractic is Safe

Duluth Chiropractic for familiesWe care for a large number of patients in our Duluth office, and Dr. Hans has helped countless people manage a range of health problems. In spite of this, a frequent worry that seems to prevent some men and women from getting care is whether or not chiropractic adjustments are safe. Well, according to three different studies (out of many on the issue), the answer to this concern is a resounding: "Yes! Chiropractic is safe!"

Australian Study: Chiropractic is Safe

The first research paper(1) was published in Spine and included 183 adults. Each test subject reported affected by spinal pain, and half of the individuals received real chiropractic care while the other half were given two fake chiropractic treatment sessions. Information was obtained after each real or fake adjustment to discover if any unfavorable side effects occurred as a result of the real chiropractic adjustments.

The doctors reported that none of the patients documented any significant negative side effects at all after getting one or two sessions of chiropractic. Some people did report that they got a headache (9% of patients) or muscle stiffness (about 1 out of 3) after treatment, but the effects were not serious.

Large US Survey Finds that Chiropractic is Safe

The next research study(2), also released in the prestigious publication, Spine, was done in an effort to establish the safety of chiropractic. The test group was much larger -- 20,000 patients. Each participant received chiropractic adjustments of the cervical spine, with over 50,000 total adjustments for all patients.

Once again, the researchers discovered no serious adverse side effects. The experts calculated the risk of total side effects to be about 6 out of every 10,000 consultations or every 100,000 treatment sessions. And, just as with the first study, some volunteers did report non-serious, milder, unwanted effects such as dizziness (about 1.6%) or a headache (4 out of every 100), and this caused the researchers to determine that "the risk of a serious adverse event, immediately or up to 7 days after treatment, was low to very low."

Chiropractic Adjustments are Safe for Kids

This third study(3) is unique from the first two reports, as it focuses on the safety of chiropractic care for children. In this article, the authors analyzed data reported by both chiropractors and parents involving 816 children who participated in 7,173 chiropractic adjustments.

Out of 5,438 chiropractic appointments made for the young ones, chiropractors responding to the survey reported only three cases where there were negative side effects. When parents were surveyed, they indicated only two adverse side effects out of 1,735 visits. Furthermore, both chiropractors and parents reported "a high rate of improvement with respect to the children's presenting complaints."

Based on these three studies (and many more!), chiropractic care has been found to be safe and effective for everyone. To learn what chiropractic care can do for you, call our Duluth clinic and schedule an appointment today at (770) 622-9355.
