Before Your Appointment

It is a good idea to arrive at your physiotherapy appointment properly dressed. It is best that you wear snug comfortable clothing that doesn't restrict your movement. It is also a good idea to bring your insurance card, a form of identification, the prescription that your physician gave you, and if needed, your co-pay.

Types of Physical Therapy We Offer

  • Electro-Muscle Stimulation: This is a special form of electrical current that is administered at the site of injury, especially muscles, for the blocking of pain. It is recommended in cases in which pain is accompanied by swelling, inflammation and muscle spasms.
  • Intersegmental Traction: This therapy enhances passive motion to the spine and intervertebral disc for the purpose of stretching spinal joints and increasing mobility. Since disc have a poor blood supply, they get nutrients from the circulation of fluids surrounding the spinal joints. Fixations prevent this natural circulation and can lead to disc thinning and degeneration.  This therapy helps increase and restore motion to the spine.
  • Trigger Point Therapy: Trigger points are areas within the muscles that are tight and tender to the touch. This interferes with normal muscle function by restricting normal motion, weakens the muscle and may refer pain to other parts of the body. Using the hands, we can locate tight and tender trigger points or nodules of muscle fibers. Our office uses a vibracussor to gently massage the area to promote normal range of motion and promote faster healing.
  • Therapeutic Ultrasound: This therapy uses high-frequency sound waves administered in the area of soft tissue injury. Sound vibrations as fast as a million times per second, penetrate tissues deep in the body, creating a heat response. These vibrations and heat help break down and disperse unhealthy calcium and other hard tissue accumulations.
  • Whole Body Vibration Therapy: This therapy uses a platform that patients stand on while performing certain exercises to increase strength, range of motion and balance. Most sessions last between five to ten minutes depending on the number of areas being exercised and the severity of the injury or condition being monitored. Benefits include: Reduced low back pain, increased flexibility, Improved posture, healthier breathing and increased strength and muscle tone.
  • Cold Laser Therapy: Cold laser units come in various sizes and shapes.  Often the units used are handheld and similar to the size of an average flashlight.  The treatment time required is usually dependent on two factors, the condition being treated and the size of the area affected.  A major advantage of cold laser therapy units is the ability to penetrate deep into tissues and joints while retaining the capability to also treat conditions closer to the skin surface.  People utilizing cold laser therapy as a non-invasive form of treatment report feeling little or no sensation during the treatment process.  Regardless of how deep the light waves penetrate, the energy is eventually absorbed by the damaged cell providing it with the boost to begin working.  Plants using the suns light to stimulate growth and healing is a good analogy to demonstrate the effects of cold laser therapy.   As these cells are repaired, the body is able to decrease the sensation of pain, reduce swelling, and accelerate the time required to heal.
  • Mechanical Intermittent Traction: By decompressing the cervical and lumbar disc and joint areas with a cycling stretching motion. At Duluth Injury & Rehab Center we are able to promote an increase of fluids and blood to that area. Not only will this help decompress the area but it will also promote the bodies natural healing ability.
  • Therapeutic Exercises: Without regular exercise, muscles and ligaments weaken, and over time, fibrotic scar tissue develops which changes the elasticity in the supporting muscles.  When this happens in the spine this leads to uneven wear and tear of the spinal joints which causes degenerative changes in the disc and other soft tissues.  A program of therapeutic exercises can help slow down this degenerative process and helps to restore tone and balance to these damaged tissues.  There are numerous benefits totherapeutic exercises including:
    • Increase strength and range of motion
    • Retrains damaged muscles
    • Strengthens spinal structures
    • Speeds the healing process
    • Helps you hold your adjustments longer
    • Increased energy
    • Burns fat
